Randburg
Cycle
Division

Randburg police station has a cycle division to police those areas where vehicles cannot access. The patrols last for three to four hours and are on/off road affairs, mostly trawling the parkland and bush-like sections of the Braamfontein spruit trail that's so popular with mountain bikers. The bicycle patrol obviously has limitations and works in conjunction with vehicle patrol units that provide backup when necessary and transporting arrested suspects to the Randburg station.

HOT LINE

A hot line has been established for members of the public to contact the Randburg Police with tip offs of criminal activity in the Randburg Area.

Members of the public are encouraged to make use of this number, thus enabling the Randburg SAPS to curtail crime in the area, the more eyes seeing things and reporting, the greater the chances of catching and prosecuting the criminals.

Let's all work together and bring crime down to an absolute minimum. We can't do anything about criminal activity if we do not know about it.

All information will be treated confidentially

JMPD Issues Illegal fines

We point out that the AARTO Act and Regulations are very clear with respect to how infringement notices under the Act must and shall be served. The legislature was very clear in what its intention was with regard to how notices must be served on alleged infringers and did not suggest that anyone should be allowed to subject the legislation to their own interpretation.

Randburg SAP Cricket Team

Dear All

Yesterday (Sunday). Our Randburg SAP Cricket Team played a 30 overs limited match against Roodepoort SAP at Laerskool Helderkruin.

We bated first and scored 167 all out. Roodepoort was rescued by the "home town" score board and narrowly beat us by five wickets.

This was our first match ever. And we played brilliant.

  1. Please come support us against Florida SAP (in April), we play at home at the St Stithians oval.
  2. If you can play cricket please contact R/Warrant Officer Des Shaw.
  3. Detective Tait & Const Perumal, (you said you were coming to play on Sunday and you never turned up). At our next game (you will carry the water bottles onto the field).

Regards

Brent Kur
R/Captain

ATM Fraud and Card Theft

  • Here you see an individual who apparently is making a bank transaction at the ATM

Placing the trap

  • What he really is doing is placing a trap in the ATM machine to "capture" the next ATM user's card

Lookout Warning

  • Altering the ATMs is a risky business, these individuals work in teams. The lookout warns of any possible eye witnesses or of the next potential victim.

The Victim

  • Here we see the next client using the ATM, after the trap has been set. He inserts his card and begins his transaction.

Springing the TRAP

  • The ATM card appears to be confiscated, and the customer is confused, asking himself, "Why has my card been confiscated?"
  • However, we can see the cavalry coming to help.

Honest Samaritan offering HELP

  • Here we see the thief pretending to help
  • What he is really doing is trying to gain the "Customer's PIN", since he has captured the card.

Gaining access to the PIN

  • The good Samaritan convinces the Customer that he can recover the card, only if the Customer enters his PIN as the same time the Samariton presses "cancel" and "enter".

Situation Hopeless, "They Leave"

  • After several attemtps the customer is convinced his card has been confiscated.
  • The customer and the Samaritan leave the ATM.

Recovering the CARD

  • Satisfied the area is clear, the thief returns to recover the confiscated card from his trap.
  • He not only has the card, he also has the PIN the customer provided unknowingly.

The Escape

  • In possession of the card and the PIN he leaves the ATM with R 4,000.00 from the customers account

How did they do that?

This section is not to show criminals how to do it, as they already know how and they are already practising this technique, we are just exposing how they are doing it so that you, the public, can safe guard yourself from falling victime to the theft.

The TRAP

  • The TRAP is made up of XRAY film, which is the preferred material by the theives
  • Simply because of the black colour which is similar in appearnce to the slot on the card reader.

Placing the TRAP

  • The TRAP is inserted into the ATM slot
  • Care is taken not to insert the entire film into the slot.
  • The ends are folded outward and have glue strips are used for better adhesion to the inner and outer surface of the slots.

Invisible to the unsuspecting Victim

  • Once the ends are firmly glued and fixed to the slot, it is almost impossible to detect by unsuspecting customers.

How is the card confiscated?

  • Slits are cut into both sides of the TRAP.
  • This prevents the card form being returned prior to completing the transaction.

Retrieval of the confiscated card

  • As soon as the Customer has gone and the have your PIN, the theif removes the glued TRAP, by grasping the folded tips.
  • He simply pulls the TRAP out that has retained the card.

Safety Recomendations

  • Once your card has been confiscated, inspect the ATM slot and card reader for any signs of tampering.
  • Should you see the film tips glued to the slot, loosen the tips from the slot edges and pull out the trap to recover the card.
  • Report the incident IMMEDIATELY to the Bank.
